[UPDATE] Boston Teacher Salaries: How Do They Compare?

WBUR created a map showing how average teacher salaries compare across Massachusetts, and Boston Public Schools' average K-12 teacher salary is higher than the state average.
This article previously stated that Boston had the lower average teacher salary than Cambridge. However, Matt Wilder, Boston Public Schools' director of media relations, pointed out on Thursday afternoon that WBUR used outdated numbers from the 2008-2009 school year in creating their map.
The most recent numbers from the 2009-2010 school year put Boston at the top of the pack.
On the map, the darker the city or town, the higher the average salary. The map can be viewed for elementary teacher salaries (red), middle school salaries (green) and high school salaries (blue).
Below is a chart using the most recent numbers, from the 2009-2010 school year and on the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website, showing the average teacher salary by community in ascending order along with the municipality's expenditure per pupil from the '08-'09 school year, taken from WBUR's map.

Wow...so thats where all my tax dollars go!!! I can't believe my eyes. With all the vacation, time off and pensions, ridiculous! They get paid too much. Re think police and teachers salaries and lower our taxes. This is crazy. I hope this is inaccurate. There is something seriously wrong with this city!

Call me cynical, but $84K for 9 months/yr of babysitting Boston kids that don't want to be there seems excessive by a mile. Note that there is no correlation between achievement and per pupil expenditure in MA. City kids consistently under-perform their suburban peers, regardless how much more money we spend on them.
