Eliot School to Open a New K2 Classroom This Fall

The new class will accommodate the 22 students now on a wait list.

Below is a press release from the Boston Public Schools:

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent Carol R. Johnson joined with Eliot K-8 families and staff Tuesday night to celebrate the recent announcement of the expansion the North End school. Mayor Menino and Superintendent Johnson also announced Tuesday that the school will open a new K2 classroom this fall and that the Superintendent has given preliminary approval for the school to seek Innovation School status.

“The Eliot School is a proud example of all that Boston Public Schools has to offer,” said Mayor Menino. “Over the past five years, the Eliot has emerged as a powerhouse - demonstrating remarkable progress in its MCAS scores. The Eliot’s explosive growth is brought about because of the intensity, focus, hard work, persistence, and the incredible spirit of the school’s leadership, staff, and parents.”

Last week Mayor Menino announced the city had acquired the nearby North Bennet Street School buildings, allowing for expansion of the Eliot in the coming years. Tuesday night, Mayor Menino gave more detail on the plan announcing the school would open a new K2 classroom in the fall, which will accommodate 22 students currently on the waiting list.

Superintendent Johnson announced she had given the school preliminary approval to seek Innovation School status. Innovation School status would allow the school a degree of autonomy and flexibility in hiring, school hours, and other areas. To be implemented the plan must be approved by a majority vote of the school’s faculty and of the school committee.

“The Eliot School has demonstrated it is a high-achieving school with so much potential,” said Dr. Johnson. “I can’t wait to see how far this school community will go in the years to come. This Innovation School status is exactly the right plan to move this school to the next level.”
