Five Things to Know This Weekend: Special Edition

A busy weekend: daylights saving time, police career expo, skating competition at the Frog Pond, Esplanade cleanup, deadline for public artwork competition on Monday.

Sometimes there are just too many things going on to fit into our weekly morning updates. This seems to be one of those busy weeks that require an extra edition of "Five Things to Know." Therefore, for your informational edification, I present to you this special edition of "Five Things."

1. Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday at 2 a.m., so remember to spring your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed tonight. Losing an hour of sleep is never fun, but spring is now less than 10 days away!

2. Ever wanted to work as a police officer, firefighter, sheriff or in the emergency medical service? Find out about these careers today from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. at the Public Safety Career Expo at Ruggles T Station.

3. Check out the Mayor's Cup Skating Competion today at the Frog Pond from 10 a.m. to noon, where young skaters compete for the title of "Boston's Best." Also at the event will be Fred Palascak, winner of ABC's "Skating with the Stars" and the Team Excel Collegiate Synchronized Skating Team, performing an interpretive program. See Beacon Hill Patch later today for a video of the event.

4. Help make Beacon Hill ready for a beautiful spring by pitching in at the annual Charles River Esplanade cleanup tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., organized by The Esplanade Association. Volunteers should meet in the morning at the Hatch Shell.

5. The deadline to submit a proposal for a public artwork installation at the Boston Marine Industrial Park is Monday. The winner will have his or her art displayed for 18 months. The piece should "celebrate the innovative and ecological spirit that will define Boston’s Innovation District," according to the Boston Art Commission.
