Flowers Are Calling It Quits On Winter

Early blossoms are springing up, along with the problems that a mild winter brings.

While some humans are wondering if we'll ever get snow and cold, the flowers have gone ahead and called it: winter (or what we had of it) is over.

Blossoms are springing up in the Public Garden and greenthumbs across the state are noticing that their plants and flowers are pushing up ahead of schedule.

“I have some grape hyacinths and some daffodils,’’ Trudi Fondren, president of the Beacon Hill Garden Club told the Boston Globe. “You would expect them sometime in late March or early April.’’

The early spring isn't necessarily good news, according to horticulturalists and gardeners. The absence of frost has left weeds with fertile ground in which to take deep root, and pests haven't been killed by the cold either. Furthermore, the snowmelt that normally leaves spring soil hydrated just hasn't happened this year.
