Livingstone Wins 8th Suffolk House Democratic Primary

Beacon Hill resident defeated Back Bay's Joshua Dawson and could be challenged by write-in GOP candidate in June.

Beacon Hill lawyer Jay Livingstone claimed victory in the special Democratic primary for the 8th Suffolk County House of Representatives seat after the vote in Boston and Cambridge Tuesday.

Livingstone beat Back Bay's Joshua Dawson, a former aide for several state politicians, in the primary for the district covering Back Bay, Beacon Hill, West End, Fenway and parts of Cambridge.

With 100 percent of the Boston precincts reporting, Livingstone won the city with nearly 68 percent to just shy of 32 percent for Dawson, according to unofficial results from the city.

There were no candidates on the Republican ballot for the primary, however, Victor Navarro of Cambridge has told the Boston Globe he plans on conducting a write-in campaign to be the GOP nominee.

The seat is vacant because former Rep. Marty Walz resigned to become the new Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts president and CEO.

On his campaign's Facebook page, Livingstone said he was "humbled and grateful" to be the nominee, and thanked Dawson.

"It was an honor to share this experience with someone who cares so much about this community," he wrote.

On his own campaign Facebook page, Dawson thanked his supporters.

"Unfortunately, we were not victorious today," he wrote. "Congratulations to Jay on running a fabulous campaign."

The general election will be June 25, the same day of the U.S. Senate special election.
