Mayor Thomas Menino Tells Democratic National Convention: 'Romney's Values Aren't Boston Values'

Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston spoke on Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention. Did you see his speech? How'd he do?

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino delivered a short speech Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

He spoke mostly about Governor Mitt Romney's time as the chief executive of the Bay State. And he wasn't complimentary. Menino derided Romney's performance as a job creator, saying Massachusetts ranked 47th in the nation for job growth under the Republican's leadership.

Did you hear Menino's remarks? If not, you can view the speech at this YouTube clip. It runs just under seven minutes.

Below are Menino's remarks as prepared for delivery. He stuck very close to them, ad-libbing only slightly.

Good evening Charlotte.  Good evening fellow Democrats and fellow Americans.

I come from Boston, where we birthed a revolution, where we first sent John Kennedy to Congress, and where millions of people have come to study, including a man named Martin Luther King.

So it’s an honor to be here tonight, with so many people determined to move our country forward. I know all Americans are proud to carry the torch of progress, and in Boston, we take that job very seriously.

That’s why I get a little frustrated when I see the Romney campaign called “Boston” in the newspapers and on TV.

Mitt Romney’s campaign may come from Boston, but his campaign’s values aren’t Boston values.

Because in Boston, we know this country didn't become great by excluding folks and leaving each other on their own.

In Boston you know what we call immigrants? Mom and dad.

You know what we call "same sex couples"? Our friends. Our brothers and sisters.

And in Boston, we know government isn’t the answer or the enemy. It’s a partner.

In Boston – like many cities around the country –we’re seeing progress all around us today. In large part, it’s because this President and this Administration gave ordinary people a leg up:

Construction supported by stimulus dollars.  Better schools pushed by Race To The Top. Growing hospitals and health centers. And booming life science companies born from national research support.

So today, we stand with President Obama, and his plan to lead us forward.

Now, Mitt Romney is a decent guy. As the Mayor of Boston, I worked with him when he was Governor.  But he made a lot of decisions that were bad for our state – and now he wants to carry those wrong-headed policies to the rest of the country.

Mitt Romney spends a lot of time in this campaign talking about his business experience and about how, if elected, he will create “lots of jobs.”

I’ve been thinking, this pitch sounds familiar.  And you know why? Because it’s the same thing he said when he ran for Governor of my state.

He promised to bring business to the state, but when he was in office, Massachusetts ended up 47th out of all 50 states in job creation.

There’s a reason for that. Governor Romney cut education. He cut workforce training. He disguised his tax hikes as “fees,” and he still exploded our long term debt by $2.6 billion.

Mitt likes business-speak. Think of me as a reference check:  In Massachusetts, Mitt Romney had the one job in his life that’s closest to being President, and it didn’t go all that well.  We saw a flood of promises and too few new jobs.

Even worse, Governor Romney is now running away from his major accomplishment – a health care reform that he called a model for the nation.

Mitt Romney is an okay guy. But he’s learned all the wrong lessons, and now he’s doubling down on all the wrong plans.

His campaign is located in a city moving forward, but his ideas would set our country back.

Up in Boston, we have a plaque that says: "Paul Revere started a ride, which in a way has never ended."

That’s true about our country, too. In every generation, the American people have taken up that ride, pushing the United States forward. We’ve never gone back.

So today we have a clear choice to make. Will we move forward together – or will we go back to the trickle down philosophies that Mitt Romney believes in.

The choice is clear – It’s time to keep moving forward. It’s time to reelect Barack Obama as President of the United States!

Thank you Charlotte and good night.

He has to support Warren if he meant anything he said today. Brown has no commitment to women, gays, immigrants or the poor. The Mayor has to commit soon.

What in the name of God does this obese, inarticulate former chauffeur know about values. Boston will never be a truly world class city as long as this imbecile remains in office.

I don't understand why people make fun of a man's disability. He has a speech impediment; nevertheless, he has been a good, strong Mayor for many years and hopefully many more to come. Now he just has to endorse Warren and we will all be happy.

Well the substance of Mayor Menino's speech was good. His unfortunate delivery due to a physical defect was good despite. Too bad he didn't take the opportunity to provide that Mitt Romney, while Mass Gov., wrote and introduced his Platinum Standard Death Penalty Bill, which was much debated and defeated. NO ONE is talking about this fact. The press is not questioning Romney on his current position! If pressed it would be very interesting to hear his answer- will he flip-flop as he has with universal health care? Is he now a kinder gentler death penalty proponent? As we lurch closer and closer to a police state supporting becoming a prision death industry, someone had better raise this point!

What's wrong with the death penalty? You kill someone, you should pay the price. 3 squares, a cot, cable tv for murder? That is F'd up.

Why aren't questions being asked of DeFraud about his failure to rein in the corruption taking place with the EBT debacle? Can't lose the vote of the poor, now can you?

Just remember, Warren is a 1%er!! Oh wait, she's worth +$14MM and claims not to be.

mumbles is an idiot and so is warren. no wonder everyone in this state feels entitled to whatever everyone else has (that paid for it). Dont even get me started on the judge granting the tranny a sex change. I heard some transgender advocate say, it complicates things that he murdered and nearly decapitated his wife and is in jail for the rest of his life, but the procedure should be made available to him. People in MA are all insane! mumbles, devil patrick and warren are killing us.

I have to admit every time I see someone refer to "mumbles" I laugh. I think about the last mayoral election, where Flaherty's supporters used that term so much. The one where Menino then won in a landslide.

But your hilarity doesn't end there. The Democratic-controlled state of Massachusetts opposed the gender assigment surgery in Federal Court. They lost. They lost in a ruling handed down by--get this--a Federal judge appointed by Ronald Reagan and confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate.

But you heard "some transgender advocate say" something and that shows the mayor, the governor and a senate candiate are "killing us."

We'll be okay.

I have a deeply critical view of the mayor's actions and omissions from time to time, but come on, I don't appreciate this kind of name-calling.

I thought His Honor's speech had a refreshing authenticity that was lacking in the speeches of others, including Elizabeth Warren's. We were treated to the spectacle of a leader of our city speaking to the nation from the heart about things that are really important to him, and thoroughly undaunted by what everyone knows is a challenging speaking ability. I was proud.

As for that plaque that says "Paul Revere started a ride, which in a way has never ended" -- I sure have never seen it, but never mind, what he meant was that

"Borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere."

Yeah, that's it. Everyone is so fragile. Couldn't be that if someone's calling you out it's because you're being a jackass... get over yourself.

Actually Chris, the pussification of America is in full force. Medals for finishing last. Youth sports not keeping score so the "losing" team doesn't have their feelings hurt. Parents yelling at refs for not calling penalties on what they (parents) perceive as a "hard hit." Comedians telling jokes, then having to apologize because someone had their feelings hurt. It's a f**king comedian, don't like it, don't listen. The list goes on and on and on and on.

So yes, people are overly fragile. Grow a pair. Life can suck. If you don't see this, then I'd suggest you expand your current events new feeds.

Apparently you're easily offended by youth sports. Hey, what did you think of Menino's speech? Love it? Hate it?

I'm offended that society thinks excellence is a bad thing. We're doomed.

I don't listen to Mumbles, but I read the transcript. Puke. We ride together? There are people that ride, then there are people who ride on the coattails of those that choose to work their asses off to make something of themselves. G'day Chris.
