Newbury Street to Close Down for Fashion's Night Out [Video]

Models, fashion shows, luxury cars, musicians, street performers and more on the Sept. 8 celebration.

Newbury Street will close down to cars on Sept. 8 for musicians, performers, models, celebrities, a car show, in-store events and more as anyone with a stylish bone in their body comes together to celebrate Fashion's Night Out from 6 - 10 p.m.

The city of Boston started posting no parking signs on Sept. 8 from 2 p.m. - midnight, so plan accordingly.

"Everbody is so excited," said organizer Michele Messino, executive director of the  Last week she had 40 businesses signed up. Since then the shops have doubled, and the event is growing every day.

"We've got over 85 participants, and that's just in-store," Messino said. "That's not counting what we've got going on in the streets.

The global event was started in New York by Vouge magazine in 2009. It quickly spread to Milan, Paris, London, Los Angeles and other fashion cities.

"Boston never kind of did much." Messino said. "We were like, Newbury Street is the fashion street of Boston. We should be participating."

Indeed.

"We said you know what, let's try to find a sponsor," Messino said. "We haven't closed the street in 15 years and we knew that's what it would take to make this a true celebration."

Herb Chambers stepped up with the finances needed to shut it down, and will also showcase 90 vehicles during the event. Every block will have a different theme: green cars, hi-level sedans, convertibles, sports cars, luxury vehicles, trucks, SUV's, and mid-level sedans.

musicians will play in a dozen different locations, and businesses up and down the artery will feature models and fashion shows in front of their shops, and special in-store events like raffles, refreshments, gift giveaways, and more. Restaurants are getting on the action with appetizers, cocktails and free samples.

And let's not forget about the celebrities. Meet actresses Kate O'Brien, Erica McDermott and Melissa McMeekin, locals who played some of the sisters in the movie "The Fighter," at the Center Stage in front of Stephanies on Newbury. Mayor Thomas M. Menino will also be there from 7:15 - 7:45 p.m.

More and more events keep being added to the full schedule. And check out the event on Facebook.

"It's not about discounts," Messino said (although it doesn't look like anyone will be disappointed.)"It's about creating a fun event attract the consumer to come down and shop, shop, shop."

The month of September is known for fall fashion, and it's not something we'll forget anytime soon.

"This is huge," Messino said. "And by next year this will be really huge."
