Time Capsule Celebrates Brewer Fountain Completion

The city will celebrate the and Liberty Mall Renovation, on the , with a ceremony and time capsule on Wed, May 2, at noon.

Newspapers, proclamations from the city and Massachusetts Legislature, a list of the local community donors who supported the project, artifacts representing park life such as a lemonade cup from a vendor, photos of what the area looked like before the renovation as well as current photos, and landscape renovation plans are all items that will go in the time capsule. All written items have been printed on special paper so that they will be preserved.

The Friends of the Public Garden in association with the City of Boston Parks and Recreation Department and Mayor Thomas M. Menino will host the commemoration. 

The Brewer Fountain, given to the City of Boston by Gardner Brewer in 1867, was restored in May 2010. The renovation includes a new irrigation system, resurfaced paths, storm drainage improvements, refurbished grass areas, 32 new trees, and wooden benches that sit around the edge of the plaza.

Improvements made to the plaza and Liberty Mall landscape leading up to the State House includes movable tables and chairs, a “reading room” area with books and newspapers, chess and checkers, a food truck, and a piano for daily lunchtime entertainment.

“These new upgrades will bring much-needed vitality back to this area and provide all of the amenities our residents and visitors deserve in this historic location,” said Mayor Thomas Menino. "Thanks to the superb public/private partnership between the City and the Friends of the Public Garden, this project has received the support and funding by the people who care about Boston that it needed to be a huge success."
