Video: Skating Competition at the Frog Pond
The first annual Mayor's Cup Skating Competition comes to Beacon Hill.
On Saturday morning, students from The Skating Club of Boston came to the Frog Pond for the inaugural Mayor's Cup Skating Competition. By performing various figure skating techniques from their classes, the students compete for the title of "Boston's Best." This year, that title was awarded to Team Boylston.
Major highlights of the event included a performance from Frog Pond Skating School instructors Melanie Lambert and Fred Palascak, winner of ABC's "Skating with the Stars" with his partner, Rebecca Budig. The Team Excel Collegiate Synchronized Skating Team also made an appearance.

Who competed in this event? This article was vague and the wording is confusing. (Who won Skating with the Stars with whom?)
And you do realize that the synchronized skating team is nationally competitive and has been skating that program since September, right? Who told you it was an improv performance?
Patch needs a fact checker -- badly. (Or a better editor...)

Wow, an improv team hearing the music for the first time? Excel ranks in the top half of the country's collegiate synchronized skating teams... They've been perfecting this program for 6 months and competing all over the US with it.
It would be ridiculously insane to conclude that a group of 20 skaters could skate, in unison, to a program like that with no prior practice. I agree with Alex above... Definitely need some fact-checking here.

I dnt really knw much bout this event which the article is about because i'm from the UK, but all the skaters who took part in the competition were brilliant and clearly very talented. Loved the Melanie and Fred clip of their routine as I am a huge fan of there's, it must have been amazing for the students at the Boston Skating Club to see two of their instructors perform.
Where it says about Skating with the Stars they are refering to Fred Palascak, he won the show with Rebecca Budig in December last year.

We were not implying that Team Excel was not nationally competitive or that they had not done that routine before. It was announced at the event that the team was not aware what music was going to be played so they would have to perform to music that they had not heard yet.
As stated in the beginning of the video, the competitors in the event were all students of the Skating Club of Boston and the event was held so that they could show what they learned in their classes. The instructors thought the event would be a nice way to wrap up the season.

I was there and that was definitely NOT announced.
Even if it was, improv does not mean "pre-practiced routine to new music," it means "completely spontaneous."
Clearly this is an error in the article -- just fix it. This type of "reporting" is why people turn to Your Town in the Globe instead of Patch.

As someone involved in the coordination of the event, I would just like to clarify that these were the exact words that were used to introduce Team Excel:
Team Excel Collegiate proudly represents The Skating Club of Boston. They are the 3 time Eastern Sectional silver medalists, and just returned from their trip to California for the U.S. Nationals for Synchronized Skating!
This certainly turned into a game of telephone!
