The acclaimed voices of Schola Cantorum of Boston celebrate the Christmas season with a joyful program "Nowell Sing We!" on Friday, December 14 at 8 pm at Church of St John the Evangelist, 35 Bowdoin Street on Beacon Hill in downtown Boston. Director Frederick Jodry leads the ensemble of a dozen singers in works spanning medieval to modern styles including motets and anthems by Josquin, Victoria, Joubert, Sheppard and Pärt.
For the past 25 years, Schola Cantorum has been recognized for lively and evocative performances of Renaissance sacred music. Singing without a conductor, the group brings intimacy and excitement to this lovely repertoire. Schola Cantorum has performed at Tanglewood and served as the chorus for the Boston Camerata under director emeritus Joel Cohen, winning prizes for recordings ranging from Early American Shaker Music to Spanish Music from the New World. Schola Cantorum has also sung at the Boston Early Music Festival. Founder/director Frederick Jodry has been acclaimed as an organist and singer, and since 1991 as the conductor of the Brown University Chorus.

More About The Church of St. John The Evangelist
St. John's is an Episcopal church on Beacon Hill with a beautiful and unexpected sanctuary hidden behind a castle-like exterior. The church was built in 1831 and operated as a monastery until 1985 when it was transformed into an Episcopal parish.
The church is socially progressive and liturgically traditional. St. John's describes itself as an inclusive worshipping community and has many programs reaching out to the homeless, the lesbian, gay and bisexual communities.
Mass is held at 10:30am every Sunday. St. John's hosts free concerts featuring classically-trained musicians on Wednesdays at 5:30pm. These are open to the public.
On Saturdays and Sundays the church is the host to a soup kitchen.
If you have any questions or if you would like be included in the rotation of (lay) officiants, please contact the Parish Secretary through the church office.
