Boston Student Comes in 4th Place in BioGENEius Competition!

Nathan Han, a rising sophomore at Boston Latin School was named the 4th place winner of the BioGENEius Challenge, the premier competition for high school students across the world that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology.  A panel of judges found that Nathan’s research stood out from the 14 other finalists from across the US and Canada competing in the Challenge.

The BioGENEius Challenge is unique among international competitions in hosting participants at a leading industry conference, where they get the chance to meet industry experts and scientists.  This exceptional opportunity serves to inspire the next generation of STEM innovators in their career paths in the biotechnology industry.  The BioGENEius Challenge highlights exemplary student research to encourage today’s youth to consider education and careers in biotechnology.

Nathan presented his project entitled “Characteristics of Deleterious Mutations in Tumor Suppressor Genes,” to the judges. The project focuses on software that detects cancer causing genes such as the BRCA1 gene, which is thought to be involved in breast as well as other types of cancer. 

Nathan won the 4th place cash prize of $1,000 while in San Diego.
