Beacon Hill Beautification Projects Get $17,750 From the City

The money will go toward enhancing the tree pits along Charles Street and the flower bed at the Phillips Street Play Area.

The city of Boston awarded $17,750 in grants two Beacon Hill projects this month as part of Beautify Boston program, which supports the beautification and infrastructure projects that enhance usability and transform neighborhoods' open spaces.

The city gave the Beacon Hill Civic Association $10,000 to assist with the purchase and installation of plantings in the tree pits along Charles Street. In honor of its 90th anniversary, the BHCA has undertaken the project of beautifying the 57 tree pits along Charles Street.

The grant will be matched by the BHCA, which as raised $150,000 toward the project, and has secured 31 sponsors for the pits.

"We are very appreciative of the city providing us with these funds so that we can better protect the plants and flowers that make the Play Area an attractive place for families,” said Rob Whitney, head of the Friends of the Phillips Street Play Area.

Stephen Young, the chairman of the BHCA, thanked Boston Parks and Recreation Department Commissioner Toni Pollak and Arborist Greg Mosman for their support of these projects. “These projects help us to continue our mission of enhancing the quality of life in our urban, residential neighborhood," he said.
