Friends Conduct George Washington Statue Cleaning
The protective coating on Washington's statue needs to be replaced every seven years.
The Friends of the Public Garden are conducting regularly scheduled conservation cleaning of the Public Garden's George Washington statue, located close to the Arlington Street intersection with Commonwealth Avenue.
According to the Friends, the statue's the protective Incralac coating, which protects the bronze, wears down and needs to be removed, with a fresh, brand-new coat to be applied every seven years.
"By doing this work the statue's overall condition and appearance will be protected from damage from acid rain," the Friends wrote in a statement. "Regular maintenance is very important because it prevents a much more costly full restoration."
Daedalus Fine Art Conservators is overseeing the cleaning, which is expected to take five days. The Adopt a Statue Fund and
the Friends of the Public Garden's Henry Lee Conservation Fund are providing the funding for this cleaning.
