No Plan Approved Yet for Chestnut Street House

An order to demolish the historical home at 124 Chestnut St. was issued in March. The violation notice has lead to community outcry.

Even after receiving a violation notice from the City of Boston to "immediately demolish" in March," the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission has not yet approved a plan for the 124 Chestnut St. building.

According to The Boston Globe, The property has been caught in a neighborhood debate between preservationists and the commission who complied with the city's order to demolish the house.

On the website 124ChestnutStreet.com, started by owner Dean Stratouly to better neighborhood relations with the project, Stratouly cited "visible signs of foundation failure" water infiltration issues as part of the necessity to demolish the building.

A community open house has also been planned to answer questions and act as a forum for discussion. The public is welcome to join on Wednesday August 21 at the Hampshire House (Thayer room, 84 Beacon St) between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

A revised plan for the property will be presented to the BHAC in September.

"I fully recognize the significance of this situation and the magnitude of the impact it has on the abutters and the entire neighborhood," Stratouly wrote on the website. "Our new home will not be any larger than the current building and we will not seek any dimensional or use variances."
