Charles Street Market Closes on Beacon Hill

Differing accounts from why the market has closed from the landlord and business owner Monday.

The Charles Street Market has closed at 62 Charles St. on Beacon Hill, with the business owners writing on Facebook Monday they plan on staying on Charles Street but at a different location.

However, the owners of the building, Linear Retail Properties, LLC, and the business owners appear to be giving different accounts about why Charles Street Market is closing.

Joel Kadis, one of the building owners with Linear Retail, said in a statement Charles Street Market was "evicted" Monday.

"Despite attempts by Linear Retail Properties, LLC to work with the Charles St. Market to stay in the building, the eviction became necessary due to significant and material unmet financial obligations," Kadis said.

Kadis attached a judgement decision from Boston Municipal Court dated May 24 that the owner, Tracy L. Hollander, owed Linear Retail over $27,000 in unpaid rent.

According to Kadis, Hollander has paid no rent as of May 1, so "the past due today is considerably higher" than the May 24 figure.

In a phone interview with Kadis, he said the locks on the building were changed Monday. He called the circumstance "disappointing and unfortunate" and was complimentary of Hollander, calling him "a fine man."

But around noon Monday, Charles Street Market posted a lengthy message on their Facebook account apologizing for the "abrupt" closing of the market.

"After 26 years at this location we have decided it best to relocate our business," they wrote. "We will remain on Charles Street and hope to share more over the next few weeks."

They added "we were unable to come to a lease agreement and it was not feasible for us to remain at this location."

They asked customers to visit their "alternative" location, Beacon Hill Market, at 55 Anderson St. and are offering "all our customers grocery delivery at no charge."

"Please bare with us over the next few weeks as we plan our move to our new address," they wrote. "We look forward to opening our doors as soon as possible and getting back to business on Charles Street!"

Kadis said Linear Retail will now look to lease the space at 62 Charles St. for a third time. They initially agreed to lease the space to Capital One Bank before Charles Street Market came in, but Kadis said the plans were scrapped "out of respect for the wishes of the Beacon Hill community."
