J. McLaughlin to Double Space on Charles Street

The new section of the store will open by May.

While there has been much news lately of stores on Charles Street closing, some are growing. Among those is the New York-based apparel shop J. McLaughlin.

The store, which has been at 34 Charles St. since September 2003, will be more than doubling its space as it expands into the the spot occupied by the Koo de Kir retail shop until mid-November.

J. McLaughlin signed a lease for the space Feb. 1 and plans to open the new wing by the beginning of May, according to a company spokeswoman. J. McLaughlin has 55 stores across the country.

"We want to offer our Charles Street customers a full assortment of our merchandise in a comfortable, vibrant and expanded setting," Eliza Madison, the spokeswoman, said.

"We've always done really well on Charles Street and we like to have a big assortment of products because we find that we have a well-rounded clientele in Boston, whether they are buying our urban collection or our resort collection, and the current space we are in is a little tight to do that," Madison said.

The store will not close during renovations.

While sad that Koo di Kir has moved out (I was a good customer!), it's great to see J. McLaughlin expanding. In a time when there is much discussion of businesses on Charks Street, it is assuring that a very good operator has found it a great place for a boutique store. I urge all my fellow Beacon Hillers to patron the new store. They have great bow ties! Sincerely, John Corey
