Noa, on Charles Street, Specializes in New England-Made Goods

When Ian and Barbara Scofidio were looking for a place to relocate their Groton-based artisanal gift shop, noa, they wanted a place that hadn't been overrun by chain stores but rather valued independent retailers.

Charles Street, they said, stood out as a "genuine Main Street" in the city. Today marks one month since noa opened its doors at 88 Charles St., where Good used to be. 

"A whole new group of retailers are choosing Charles Street because of Beacon Hill residents' support of local retail – and shoppers are noticing the new vibe alone what used to be antiques row," Barbara Scofidio said in an email

"The reception has been almost magical," Ian Scofidio said at noa Thursday. "We are just so thrilled to be here. We never imagined we would have the opportunity to open a shop on Beacon Hill."

All of noa's merchandise, including clothing, jewelry and gifts, is made by artists living in New England. In fact, Ian Scofidio said, of the 200 artists they work with, about 75 are from Massachusetts. 

"It's like the farmer's market of retail," Barbara Scofidio wrote. "People love to purchase fruits and vegetables that are grown right from a farm in their town; in our store, you find gifts that are 100 percent sourced locally. We can't keep importing everything from the other side of the world."

The concept is working on Beacon Hill. Ian Scofidio said business has been "wonderful" and that he's been impressed by the warmth and friendliness with which he was greeted. "People come in to say, 'Welcome to the neighborhood,'" he said. 

The Scofidio's moved the shop from Groton, where it had been for 10 years. They opened a second store in West Concord four years ago. This year noa was won the top stop for "Best Artisanal Gifts" in Yankee Magazine.

Good, which had been at 88 Charles St., relocated to 133 Charles St.
