Purple Monkey Yoga’s Monthly 'Revel' to Showcase Local Artists

Purple Monkey Yoga Studio’s monthly Revel will feature art, fashion, food and more every first Saturday starting January.

San Francisco and Oakland may be Bay Area art hubs but there’s just as much talent here in Union City, and that’s what Purple Monkey Yoga Studio wants to highlight with their monthly "Revel."

Held every first Saturday starting Jan. 5, the monthly events will showcase talent from up-and-coming Union City artists and fashion designers, as well as highlight local businesses and restaurants.

“We have so many amazing local artists and people that are creative and expressive here in Union City,” said Purple Monkey owner Rebecca Gatanis. “But we don’t really have a place for us to kick it. That’s what this is about.”

The events couldn’t have come at a better time.

With the recent closure of Paddy’s Coffee House, the yoga studio will carry on the community spirit set in motion by the coffee shop.

In line with the yoga studio’s “community bliss” mantra, the event is intended to build a stronger community presence within the Old Alvarado neighborhood, as well as support Purple Monkey’s community garden, which is currently in the works, Gatanis said. Gatanis hopes to have the garden ready in the spring.

Gatanis plans to hold the monthly events “for as long as we’re around,” she said. She hopes to get more people involved and make the events larger with music and open mics.

The inaugural event will be held on Jan. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight and will feature the works of art collective Haus of Godspeed, Laura Ho and Kimberly Ky. Local streetwear companies such as IMPRM, Below the Surface and others will have vendor booths.

According to Gatanis, the Haus of Godspeed will be doing live art both indoors and outside on the exterior of the yoga studio. The creative crew are also constructing a small Japanese Zen garden as an installation for the event, Gatanis said.

In addition to the art, Revel will also showcase local businesses.

Massage Envy will offer free chair massages. Wine and appetizers will be provided by Old Man Catering, Chaplin’s Sports Bistro, and Federicos Tapas and Wine Bar, Gatanis said.

“Local businesses are participating with us to make this a true community event,” Gatanis said. “It’s really awesome.”
