Shaw's Providing Free Shuttle for Charlestown Residents

Customers can travel to the supermarket location in Somerville on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Charlestown residents have another way of getting groceries now that Johnnie’s Foodmaster has closed.

Members of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council and others met Tuesday afternoon to finalize plans for a free shuttle offered through national grocery chain Shaw’s. Starting the week of Dec. 11, the shuttle will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, bringing customers to the Shaw’s in Somerville’s Twin City Plaza.

The bus will depart from the Bunker Hill Mall in Charlestown, picking up customers on Main Street near the entrance to the mall and by CVS Pharmacy.

Below is the schedule:

  • Depart from Bunker Hill Mall at 9 a.m.
  • Depart from Shaw's Twin City Plaza at 10:30 a.m.

  • Depart from Bunker Hill Mall at 1 p.m.
  • Depart from Shaw's Twin City Plaza at 2:30 p.m.

Note: There will be no service on Tuesdays, Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. Additional service for those weeks will be provided on Monday, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. The schedule for those days is as follows:

  • Depart from Bunker Hill Mall at 9 a.m.
  • Depart from Shaw's Twin City Plaza at 10:30 a.m.
  • Depart from Bunker Hill Mall at 11 a.m.
  • Depart from Shaw's Twin City Plaza at 12:30 p.m.

Whole Foods Market, which is taking over the Johnnie’s buiding, with plans to remodel and reopen in about one year, is also offering a free shuttle service while the store is closed—on Thursdays and Saturdays weekly. See the full schedule here.

Others around Charlestown have volunteered to offer free or low-cost shuttle service to a market of the customer’s choosing.

Paul my man , you got it backwards, it's the Herald that sh*ts on Ctown, elGlobo focuses on the good. When was the last time, or only time el Globo ran a front page with a picture of Ctown and ''MURDERTOWN'' in capital letters ? That's another myth , that the Herald is ''our'' paper and el Globo against ''us''. Cowie Harr has a lot of good to say about our town eh ?

Leaves at 9.00 am, arrives when? Returns at 10.30. Doesn't seem to allow much time for shopping, assuming it takes at least 30 mins to get there.

Should we just pick up everybody that needs a ride right at their front door, and maybe carry them into the car ? Then once in the car they could be offered free drinks and massages ? Or maybe we just send limos to each person ? Maybe the evil Whole Foods empire should give them free groceries too ,for all the pain and suffering they are causing our poor and elderly ? Let us know when the outrage over Hostess' closing and the affect it's having on our poor fat Townies who are being denied their Twinkies is coming ? Maybe those fat victims can demand free shuttle buses to Entanmenn's for their cupcakes. How about we make it a two for, all the junkies who hang down CVS can get on the shuttle with our shoppers and get a ride to the methadone clinic too, this free shuttle service has endless possibilities !

Or maybe I'm tired of people acting like we are ''victims'' because a supermarket in our town is going out of business. Get a grip people it's a temporary inconvenience.
