Beacon Hill Returns to Normal After Hunkering Down for Sandy

Like much of the rest of the East Coast, Beacon Hill hunkered down for much of Monday, waiting out what some dubbed the "Frankenstorm," Hurricane Sandy.

While Massachusetts didn't feel Sandy's impact as heavily as New Jersey and New York, winds still whipped through Beacon Hill causing trees to fall at 117 Pinckney St., blocking the road, and on Mount Vernon Street. 

As of 8 p.m. Monday, the city received 500 reports of tree emergencies and 211 reports of down wires, via the Mayor’s 24-hour hotline (617-635-4500), but no significant flooding was reported, according to the mayor's office. The Mayor’s hotline had managed 3,913 total calls as of 8 p.m.

NSTAR was reporting that thousands across Boston are without power. But it couldn't get to many reports during the storm since the company does not operate bucket trucks in winds greater than 30 mph. As of 9 p.m. Monday, NSTAR was reporting that 2 percent of Boston homes were without power. 

Kids got what was likely a welcome day off as Boston Public Schools closed Monday. However, today it's back to school.  

Getting around Monday was difficult as the MBTA shut at 2 p.m. and the Tobin Bridge closed in the evening. The bridge is expected to be open for the morning commute and the T will be up and running as well, with the exception of the Providence/Stoughton Line. 

Likewise, city services will be operational today, meaning that trash collection will go back on its normal schedule and normal parking rules are in effect. 

Other good news for today is that the weather is expected to be mild, with temperatures in the upper 60s and light rain. However, the wind will still be with us, blowing at about 20 mph.
