Maintenance Work Shuts Down Ted Williams Tunnel Tuesday Night

The Ted Williams Tunnel westbound will be closed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning for maintenance work, according to the state's Department of Transportation. The closure runs from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Traffic coming from East Boston will be diverted to the Sumner Tunnel. For complete details, please see the slightly edited advisory below:

MassDOT to Motorists: Plan Ahead for I-90 Restrictions through Boston Ted Williams Tunnel Complete Overnight Lane Closures to Occur in August & September

• I-90 Eastbound on the 1st Tuesday 11 p.m. to Wednesday 5 a.m.
• I-90 Westbound on the 3rd Tuesday 11 p.m. to Wednesday 5 a.m.

I-90 Westbound Closure is Tuesday, Aug. 21 into Wednesday, Aug. 22

Tuesday, Aug. 21, overnight into Wednesday, Aug. 22, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s enhanced maintenance schedule will require complete lane closures of the Ted Williams Tunnel, Interstate 90 Westbound, through Boston.

Beginning in East Boston, I-90 Westbound traffic will be diverted to the Sumner Tunnel. Inside the Sumner Tunnel, traffic should keep RIGHT and take the Storrow Drive ramp to reach Leverett Circle. From Leverett Circle, take I-93 Southbound to access I-90 Westbound.

A second detour will be active for truckers. Trucks will be directed Northbound on Route 1A to Route 16 Westbound to Route 1 Southbound (Tobin Bridge) to I-93 Southbound.

Maintenance crews, contractors, along with State and Boston Police will begin set-up for the lane closures on Tuesday evening at 11pm. Ramps that provide access to I-90 Westbound will begin closing at 11:15 p.m.  The full closure will begin at midnight on Wednesday and last until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.   Work to be performed Aug. 21 to 22 includes: cleaning drains and washing walkways, ceilings and walls.

Complete Lane Closure Dates for the Month of September:

• I-90 Eastbound Tues., Sept. 4 from 11 p.m. to Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 5 a.m.
• I-90 Westbound Tues., Sept. 18 from 11 p.m. to Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 5 a.m.

MassDOT plans to return to maintenance of I-93 through Boston in October.
