Kabbalat Shabbat with Havurah on the Hill and author Hanna Perlstein Marcus

Join us for our monthly Kabbalat Shabbat service and buffet dinner as we welcome author Hanna Perlstein Marcus to discuss her moving memoir, Sidonia's Thread: The Secrets of a Mother and Daughter Sewing a New Life in America.

When Hanna and her mother came to Massachusetts, they knew no one in America except each other. Determined to craft a life of pride, self-reliance and perseverance, Sidonia taught Hanna to “stand up straight” in fashion and in life. Sidonia's Thread is an exploration of their life together, even as Sidonia guarded her personal life from her daughter. But as Hanna uncovers her mother's closely-kept secrets, her surprising discoveries inspire a revised view of her life with her mother, replacing her conflicting emotions with true reverence.

Hanna was born in Bergen Belsen, Germany as a displaced person after World War II. Assigned to immigrate to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1949, along with her mother Sidonia, she resided in Springfield until after her graduation from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at age twenty.
