Tour: Bulfinch, Benjamin, Parris and Bryant: A Lineage of West End Architecture

Group limit: 20 Participants
Cost: $15 non-members/$7 members

When the West End was torn down and redeveloped in the late 1950’s as part of urban renewal, a number of historically significant buildings were preserved. These buildings represent a lineage of early Boston architects: Charles Bulfinch, Asher Benjamin, Alexander Parris and Gridley J.F. Bryant.

The tour will start at St. Joseph’s Church, designed by Parris (c.1824) then proceed to Lynde Street between Old West Church (c. 1806) and the Otis House (c.1796), two classic federal style buildings designed by contemporaries Bulfinch and Benjamin, we will then walk over to the MGH building designed by Bulfinch, but built by Parris (c.1817) in granite and conclude with a glass of wine at the Liberty Hotel, AKA the Charles Street Jail, build by Bryant in the Boston Granite Style (c.1851).
