For the second time in as many days, thousands of firefighters, police officers and military members from across the state and the nation will gather today to say goodbye to a fallen firefighter.

Firefighter Michael Kennedy will be laid to rest this morning following his funeral service at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury at 11 a.m.

Thousands paid their respects Wednesday night at Firefighter Kennedy’s wake. Mourners lined the streets of West Roxbury for hours to say their goodbyes.

Kennedy, 33, was killed alongside Lt. Ed Walsh battling a 9-alarm fire in Boston’s Back Bay last week. Nearly 20 more first responders were injured. Lt. Walsh’s funeral was Wednesday.

The cause of the deadly fire is still being determined. Investigators told the Boston Herald they are in the wrap-up stages of their probe saying they are confident they find out where and how the fire started.

A West Roxbury native, Kennedy lived in Hyde Park and was a six-veteran of the Boston Fire Department. He was one of the first responders in last year's Boston Marathon bombings. He served as a Marine, was a CrossFit coach and was involved in several community service initiatives, including being a Big Brother to a Milton teenager.
