Officer Shot at Mass Eye and Ear

A deputy sheriff was shot in the leg by a prisoner being transported for treatment. The suspect was then shot and is in critical condition.

A suspect is in custody after witnesses say he shot a deputy sheriff officer in the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. The suspect was also shot in the ensuing struggle.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said the suspect grabbed the sheriff's gun after he was uncuffed in the infirmary's emergency room.

The Salem Evening News has identified the suspect as Raymond Wallace, 31, of 1 Courageous Court in Salem.

According to Boston Police, the suspect acted alone.  He is in critical condition. Both were taken to Mass general Hospital for treatment.

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said he has spoken with both sheriffs involved in the shooting.

"I have spoken to the two Deputies involved and their families and I am grateful that they are both safe and being well cared for after this traumatic incident," said Koutoujian in a statement released by his office. "The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office will work with Boston Police as they conduct their investigation into this matter."
Four officers were assigned to watch the suspect, and the emergency room was shut down following the incident, according to public safety Twitter account AlertNewEngland.

The prisoner allegedly took an officer's gun and shot him, according to a report on AlertNewEngland.

According to WCVB-TV's Janet Wu, the officer is was a Middlesex County deputy sheriff. The prisoner shot the officer in the leg while being transported to the infirmary. According to AlertNewEngland, a second officer then shot the suspect.

The Lower End of Fruit Street has been taped off by police, who have swarmed to the scene. Traffic is passing single-file along on Charles Street near the Fruit Street intersection.

The Suffolk County District Attorney will investigate the incident, according to Suffolk spokesman Jake Wark.
