African Meeting House Open Despite Government Shutdown

Contrary to many public reports, including one on this site, the African Meeting House at 46 Joy St. on Beacon Hill remains open despite the government shutdown.

According to a statement from the Museum of African American History, the African Meeting House as well as the Abiel Smith School on Beacon Hill will maintain normal hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

However, the free Black Heritage Trail tours guided by National Park Service rangers will be suspended until further notice.

"Our abiding concern for our colleagues of the National Park Service is of paramount importance to each member of the staff, board, members and the thousands of visitors to Boston," they wrote in the statement. "However, we will continue to make available these iconic historic sites that tell the story of American democracy and citizenship rights and responsibilities."
