What Are the New Plans For 124 Chestnut St.?

Beacon Hill Architectural Commission asked for a more modern look for the controversial home in this week's "You Ask, Patch Answers."

The owners of the home at 124 Chestnut St. on Beacon Hill, who received a controversial order to demolish the home by the city, have posted new plans for a re-designed home on their website, 124ChestnutSt.com.

The proposed new design can be found here. According to the website, run by owner Dean Stratouly, the changes were made after a June request by the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission "that a more modern interpretation of the building design be developed."

Stratouly wrote on the site that upon buying the home this past February, he and his wife realized the home would require "a complete gut" and being in the real estate business, he and his wife were "excited about the opportunity to restore this building to its original condition."

But upon inspection, Stratouly said there were problems that ran deep regarding the home's condition, including "visible signs of foundation failure" as well as "signs of significant and continuous water infiltration into the exterior walls" among other safety and structural deficiencies.

From there, Boston inspections officials deemed the structure to be worthy of a Violation Notice "which directed us to immediately demolish it," Stratouly wrote. The violation notice, dated March 28, can be viewed here.

A new photo on the site shows that demolition of the home got underway in July. Local real estate blog Curbed Boston recently shared a photo of the demolition here as well.

A community open house has also been planned to answer questions and act as a forum for discussion. The public is welcome to join on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the Hampshire House (Thayer Room, 84 Beacon St.) between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

A revised plan for the property will be presented to the BHAC in September.
