Jay Livingstone of Beacon Hill Announces Run for State House Seat

Lawyer Jay Livingstone has entered the race for Rep. Marty Walz' seat in the State House, making him the second Beacon Hill Democrat to announce his candidacy.

“For years, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with residents of each of this district’s neighborhoods and worked side-by-side with some of the most committed community leaders in the area. I’m excited to takethis step to provide the independent progressive leadership the residents of this district deserve," he said. 

Livingstone, a self-described "progressive activist" announced his campaign the same week Nils Tracy said he intended to run for the 8th Suffolk District seat, which covers Beacon Hill, Back Bay, West End, Cambridgeport, and MIT. Walz is vacating the position to take over as president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. 

Livingstone has worked in the campaigns of Elizabeth Warren, Deval Patrick, Mac D'Alessandro and Suzanne Lee. He is also a member of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee and the Beacon Hill Civic Association, serving as the clerk of its Zoning and Licensing Committee. 

Raised in North Attleboro, Livingstone graduated from the University of Connecticut and George Washington University Law School. He has served as an assistant Attorney General in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and as an assistant district attorney for the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office. A current resident of Beacon Hill, Livingstone is an employment discrimination and criminal defense attorney and adjunct professor at Northeastern Law School.
