Massachusetts Veterans to be Honored at State House

The front doors of the State House will be opened for the state Army and Air National Guard units who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gov. Deval Patrick and Major General L. Scott Rice, Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard announced they will be honoring Bay State veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in a historical battle streamer ceremony at the State House Tuesday.

According to a statement from the Massachusetts National Guard public affairs office, Army and Air National Guard members from Massachusetts will be honored "for their selfless wartime service."

Participating units in the ceremony will have the honor of entering the State House through the front doors. According to the National Guard, that is reserved for when governors enter or leave office, when the sitting President or Head of State arrives, or when military units return from battle or war.

The National Guard noted there will be a cannon salute at the Tuesday 10 a.m. ceremony that will create loud noises from Boston Common.
