'Unfinished' March Planned on Boston Common Wednesday

March comes on the 50th anniversary of the march on Washington that included MLK, Jr.'s iconic speech.

Citing the need to "re-remember, re-imagine, and relive the March for our times," the Boston Workers Alliance, Inc. is hosting a march on Boston Common Wednesday on the 50th anniversary of the "March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom" that included Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

According to a release from the alliance, "Boston’s Unfinished March for Jobs, Freedom & Justice" will include "neighborhood organizations, base building community organizing groups, labor unions, civil rights organizations, and faith communities."

It will take place at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday starting at the intersection of Beacon Street and Park Street across from the Massachusetts State House.

The Boston Workers Alliance said the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial in Florida and the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act spurred them on to "organize and mobilize to address the continued devaluing of Black people, Black bodies, and Black political and economic interests."

"Fifty years ago the movement connected these issues with the March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom," the alliance said in their release. "It is time for us to look anew at the significance of the moment because of the Fierce Urgency of Now."
