The Beacon Hill firehouse is home to Engine 4, the third busiest fire truck in Boston. The firehouse on Cambridge Street covers District 3, serving Beacon Hill and the West End. About 60 percent of the district's calls are fire-related emergencies. The Boston Fire Department moved into the Beacon Hill firehouse on Cambridge Street in 1963. The firehouse is open to the public and when they are not out on a call, fire fighters are happy to give residents a peek inside one of the engines. The fire department traces its origins to 1678 when the first municipal fire department was organized in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
