The Church of St. John The Evangelist 35 Bowdoin St, Boston, MA02114 St. John's is a Welcoming Episcopal church on Beacon Hill with a beautiful sanctuary enveloped in a castle-like…More exterior. The church was built 1831 by Congregationalist Christians. From 1863-1883, it was occupied by the Church of the Advent. In 1883, the building became the Mission Church of St. John the Evangelist under the auspices of the Society of St. John the Evangelist, (SSJE), a monastic order. In 1985, almost a century after the brothers established the mission church here, St. John’s became a Parish Church in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.
The church is socially progressive and liturgically traditional. St. John's is an inclusive worshipping community that hosts programs reaching out to the homeless and GLBT communities. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 10:30 every Sunday morning. On Saturdays and Sundays the church hosts a soup kitchen run by Saturday/Sunday's Bread.
