The Catholic college threatened to crack down on condom-dispensing students. Is the school right to defend its beliefs or is it stifling student rights?
Some Boston College students are in hot water with the university this week. The Jesuit school sent the students letters threatening them with disciplinary action for handing out condoms on campus. The students, who are part of the group Boston College Students for Sexual Health, were giving away condoms from their dorm rooms, according to boston.com. The rooms were called “Safe sites.” But the school has a policy against the distribution of contraceptives on school grounds. Representatives for the health group said the move comes as a surprise. Why "We're No. 2!" is not a bad thing: High scores on an international science and math exam taken by eighth graders around the world show that Massachusetts students are doing better than American students as a whole.
Our citywide angst over the education of Boston’s children caught a break this week, with the good-news results for Massachusetts from an international study of mathematics and science achievement. The ray of sunshine in these parts is that Massachusetts eighth graders scored second highest in the world on the science portion of the TIMSS, the 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Just Singapore’s scores were higher. In math, the Commonwealth ranked sixth behind South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan. The test, taken by 600,000 eighth graders worldwide, is meant to show learning trends over time and has been given every four years since 1995. Massachusetts participated at a level which allowed …

State Police have no updates at this time. 12:53 p.m.] It's been a week since friends and family have seen missing Boston College student Franco Garcia. He was last spotted at Mary Ann's bar in Cleveland Circle (Brighton) around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. Garcia, a West Newton resident, is described as a Hispanic male, 21, about 5'9" tall and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue-and-white-striped button-down shirt, a North Face jacket, and glasses.
