The Boston First Responders Fund has been established by our city's first responders to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon attacks. "(The Boston Marathon) was a sad day for the city of Boston, our state and our nation,” said Edward Kelly, president of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, via press release. “(Patriots' Day) we cared for the victims and today we want to take care of them moving forward. To the families of the victims of (Monday's) tragedy, we can never bring your loved ones back or take away the injuries you sustained from this attack. The fire caused $5 million in damage but, thankfully, no injuries.
Investigators say that in-floor radiant heating caused the three-alarm fire in a Commonwealth Avenue brownstone Wednesday morning that resulted in $5 million of damage but no injuries. Firefighters responded to the five-story, three-condo building at 9:18 a.m. and quickly called for backup. "They were here in a matter seconds," John Walsh, who lives on the third floor of 17 Commonwealth Ave. and was the only one of the building's occupants who was home when alarms sounded, said of the Boston Fire Department. "When they came into the building the assessed that there was some smoke coming. Without any hesitation, they called for additional backup and they went right into the building, up the stairs," he said. Walsh said he was in the …

John Walsh was in the shower at his 17 Commonwealth Ave. home when he heard smoke alarms go off Wednesday morning. Within minutes, he was outside and watching what he called an impressive response by the Boston Fire Department. Although his condo suffered extensive water damage from the fire in the building's upper floors, Walsh couldn't be happier about the firefighters' performance. Two fire engines no longer needed by the Boston Fire Department will help the city of Cap-Haitien in Haiti.
Two fire engines no longer needed by the Boston Fire Department will soon be fighting fires in Haiti. The two fire engines are out-of-date compared to the rest of the BFD's fleet, but they will be able to help the city of Cap-Haitien, in Haiti, while the country continues its recovery from the devastating 2010 earthquake. The ownership of the two engines was transferred to the Dorchester House Multi Service Center so they could transfer it to Haiti. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino supported the donation, as did the Boston City Council.

According to a recent Boston Globe report, Toys For Tots is both overwhelmed by the amount of toys it has received and by the need this year. The article quotes Toys For Tots spokesman Marine Corporal Vin Dolan as saying, "Toys for Tots received requests from 350 Boston-area organizations this year, compared with 290 last year. And, per writer Amanda Cedrone, "two weeks ago, before the entreaty to the public, the Boston office of Toys for Tots still needed about 50,000 toys. The $4 million rescue boat will replace a 39-year-old boat and will be staffed around the clock.
City and fire officials dedicated the Boston Fire Department's new 70’ high speed aluminum fire boat in the Charlestown Navy Yard on Thursday. This boat was built over the past year in Kingston, Ontario by MetalCraft Marine at a cost of $4.2 million to replace a 39-year-old fire boat. This boat was named the John S. Damrell after the late chief of department. The boat has a dive platform, a draft of only 3 feet and can pump 13,000 gallons of water per minute. It also has the very latest in marine electronics and will be staffed around the clock.

Boston Fire Department reports that rescuers have pulled a body from the water at the Congress St. Bridge.
The Boston Fire Department is reporting that a body floating in the water at Congress St. Bridge was recovered by rescue swimmers at around 10:30 a.m. The body was taken to the dock where it will be looked at by a medical examiner. The Boston Police Homicide Unit, the Boston Fire Dive Team, Massport Fireboat and Boston EMS were all on the scene at Rowes Wharf after a witness reported seeing a body floating in the water there at around 9:30 a.m. The body, drifting in swift current, floated under the North Ave. Bridge and then under the Moakley Bridge before swimmers finally pulled it out of the water underneath the Congress St. Bridge, according to Boston Fire Department.
