Friday marks the 9th anniversary of the law that allowed gay and lesbian couples to marry in Massachusetts.
Dozens of local gay and lesbian couples gathered at the Boston Public Garden Thursday to celebrate the 9th anniversary of the law that gave them the right to marry in Massachusetts. The celebration, put on in partnership between Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), the Respect for Marriage Coalition and Mayor Thomas Menino, ended with a group photo at a location popular for wedding photography. "It's been an extraordinary five years," said Ellen Wade of Newton, who along with her wife, Maureen Brodoff, were one of the plaintiffs in the landmark case they won in 2003 that led to the adoption of marriage equality in the state. The annual parade is held on Mother's Day honoring the famed children's story "Make Way For Ducklings."
CBS Boston reported that over 1,000 children turned out to the Boston Public Garden Sunday for the annual Ducklings Day Parade. The annual event is held on Mother's Day and is a celebration of the children's story "Make Way For Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey, which is commemorated by the series of statues in the park near the corner of Beacon and Charles Street. According to CBS Boston, Mayor Tom Menino was among the officials present Sunday. The news station reported actors from the Wheelock Family Theater performed readings from "Make Way For Ducklings."

Swans Romeo and Juliet made their debut at the Public Garden Tuesday afternoon.
The crowd cheered as Boston's two beloved swans, Romeo and Juliet, made their way into the Boston Public Garden lagoon Tuesday morning, at the 25th Annual Return of the Swans celebration. Led by a brass band, the parade ran from near the "Make Way For Ducklings" statue to the George Washington statue and over the pedestrian footbridge to the lagoon, where Mayor Tom Menino welcomed the swans to their summer home. According to the city, the swans wintered at the Franklin Park Zoo. Check out our videos of the parade and the swans entrance into the lagoon. Festivities to welcome the return of Romeo and Juliet will start at 11 a.m.
A sure sign of the season will appear in Boston Tuesday as famed swans Romeo and Juliet will return to the Public Garden for another year. The 25th Annual Return of the Swans celebration will start with entertainment at 11 a.m., followed by a parade at 11:30, from the Beacon and Charles Street corner of the park to the Boylston Street side of the lagoon at the Public Garden. At 11:45, the ceremony will take place where Romeo and Juliet will be returned to their summer home in the lagoon. “We are pleased to welcome Romeo and Juliet back,” Mayor Tom Menino said in a statement. “For a quarter of a century this event has heralded the approach of summer with the swans joining the Swan Boats as Public Garden icons known to visitors worldwide.” …

The first phase of the project will shore up the north edge of the lagoon.
The first phase in a five-year project to stabilize the edge of the Boston Public Garden Lagoon begins next week with a renovation of the a third of north shore. This phase, budgeted at $165,700, will address leakage issues that result in puddling on the lawn areas around the lagoon. The work will be on the north side of the pond is the portion where the island is located and will stabilize the edge, which is comprised of granite coping on a concrete sill, turf, soil, gravel, and a clay liner. The project will not alter the shape of the shoreline. It is expected to be completed by early April. Additional paving and turf restoration will be included in the project, complementing pathway renovations already underway in the Public Garden. …

The following is an edited submission by the Friends of the Public Garden: The Friends of the Public Garden has begun installing new tree labels on the more than 500 trees in the Public Garden. This project is being funded through a generous grant from the Putnam Foundation. Over the past month, 100 labels have been installed with a goal of completing the remaining trees by the end of 2013. These labels can be found on some of the main walking paths with a focus on the paths that were resurfaced this past fall by the city. The Public Garden is the first public botanical garden in the United States, established in 1837. As such, the educational and informational experience of its users is a vital component of moving through the Garden. …

Not to be confused with May's Duckling Day Parade, this Saturday the Friends of the Public Garden is throwing a birthday party for one of Boston's most beloved statues. The Make Way for Ducklings statue turns 25 and to celebrate its quarter-century mark, the Friends will be offering free games and activities for families and people of all ages, including music, magic and juggling from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. Children will also be able to make birthday cards for the ducks. The statue, conceived by Nancy Shön in 1985 and installed two years later, was inspired by the Robert McCloskey classic book Make Way for Ducklings, which will also be read Saturday. The Friends of the Public Garden announced that a special guest will make an appearance at Duckling Day this Sunday: Jane McCloskey, the daughter of Robert McCloskley, author of the book that is the inspiration behind the yearly parade. Jane McCloskey will sign copies of a book she wrote about her father and will have copies of her father’s story, Make Way for Ducklings, on hand. "This beloved annual event on Mother’s Day celebrates the classic children’s story about a pair of mallard ducks who decide to raise their family on the island of the Boston Public Garden lagoon and the family’s adventures getting there," according to the Friends of the Public Garden's website. In what Mayor Thomas Menino called the real beginning of the season, the Public Garden's famous swans, Romeo and Juliet, were released back into the lagoon after a small ceremony on a picture-perfect Monday morning. "Romeo and Juliet being released today is really the sign of spring. The Public Garden lagoon has a new magnolia tree, thanks to a donation from the Garden Club of the Back Bay. And you can have one, too. The Garden Club has 50 magnolia trees for sale in celebration of it's 50th anniversary in 2013. “The Garden Club has been helping Back Bay neighbors plant magnolia trees for almost 50 years, with the first round of planting in 1963 and a second round in 1995,” said Co-president Jolinda Taylor.
