Democratic State Rep. Marty Walz easily fends of Republican challenger Brad Marston.
Incumbent Democratic State Rep. Marty Walz, who represents the 8th Suffolk district which includes much of western Beacon Hill, trounced her challenger, Republican Brad Marston, by garnering nearly 70 percent of the vote in Boston, according to the City's Election Department, and a whopping 77 percent of the vote in both Boston and Cambridge, according to Walz herself. But this election year represented a first for both Walz and Marston: It was the first election Walz has ever ran against an opponent and the first election Marston has ever run in at all. "No politician from dog catcher to governor should run unopposed. I looked at my incumbent and she has never had a serious challenger," said Marston from his home at 90 Beacon St. on …

Rep. Marty Walz beat him, but what's next for Tea Party candidate and Beacon Hiller Brad Marston?
Republican and so-called Tea Party candidate Brad Marston was chipper and relaxed at his post-election party Tuesday night, hosted at his home on 90 Beacon St. (with a little help from his mother who also lives at that address). Even after bringing his laptop into the den to track the unofficial election results at 9 p.m., Marston's mood was only slightly pensive. Of course incumbent Democrat Marty Walz beat out Marston for state representative from the 8th Suffolk district, with nearly 70 percent of the votes in Boston, according to the City's Election Department, and 77 percent of votes in Boston and Cambridge, Walz herself reported. But Marston had realistic expectations all along. "I'm realistic. This is a tough district. I would say…

Petruccelli and Walz beat out Addivinola and Marston; Patrick and Lynch victorious.
The results are in and from Patrick to Lynch to Petruccelli, Democrats have maintained their stronghold in Beacon Hill and the rest of the state. Rep. Stephen Lynch defeated Republican candidate Vernon Harrison with 79.6 percent of the votes, reports the City's Elections Department. Lynch ran away with less votes state-wide, though, capturing 69 percent to Harrison's nearly 26 percent, with 93 percent of precincts reporting, according to The New York Times. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Gov. Deval Patrick captured 70 percent of the vote in Boston to beat out Republican candidate Charlie Baker, who garnered 23 percent of the vote and Tim Cahill, the independent candidate, who got just over 5 percent of the vote, according to the …

Two candidates for State Rep. and two candidates for State Sen. meet at the Beacon House to field questions from neighbors.
(This is Part II of an article relaying the candidates' discussion with neighbors. Check out Part I.) Four candidates running to represent Beacon Hill citizens in Tuesday's elections met Friday morning at the Beacon House on Myrtle St. for a last-minute debate on the issues. About 20 Beacon Hillers showed up for the 8 a.m. event and many sipped on coffee and munched on muffins as State Rep. Marty Walz (D-8th Suffolk), her Republican opponent Brad Marston, State Sen. Anthony Petruccelli (D-1st Suffolk Middlesex) and his Republican opponent Frank Addivinola outlined their platforms and took questions from audience members. Republican Brad Marston, a Beacon Hill resident, is challenging incumbent Rep. Marty Walz for her seat on Tuesday. He …

Beacon Hill Republican pledges accountability and fiscal responsibility one week from election day.
(Check out our companion piece on Marston's competitor, Rep. Marty Walz.) Beacon Hill Republican Brad Marston held a town hall meeting at the Park Street School on Tuesday night to tell voters why he's running next Tuesday to unseat incumbent Rep. Marty Walz (D- Back Bay) from the 8th Suffolk District. Fourteen years in the restaurant business has prepared Marston for handling the heat of campaign season. If he hopes to defeat Walz, Marston will have to depend on what he has learned in business to connect with voters and understand their needs. Marston's plan for action focuses on cutting taxes and eliminating what he calls wasteful spending on Beacon Hill. He believes the state generates enough revenue to support important government …

Incumbent candidate for State Rep. Marty Walz chatted with Beacon Hillers about the campaign and her goals at a small house party Wednesday night.
(First in a series on the state rep. race. Next up: An interview with Republican candidate Brad Marston.) Massachusetts State Rep. Marty Walz (D-8th Suffolk) was relaxed and upbeat Wednesday night at a small house party on Phillips St., as she explained her reasons for running for reelection and urged the notoriously absent voters of Beacon Hill to get to the ballot box on Nov. 2. "I'm counting down: the election will be over in 13 days and two minutes and it can't come soon enough," Walz said, glancing at her wrist watch. Walz is running against Republican candidate and Beacon Hill resident Brad Marston for her seat as representative of the eighth Suffolk district -- a district she's served for the past five years. Walz, who is …

As a challenger it is extremely frustrating to read comments like Mr. Casselmans. He says he supports Representative Walz because she "manages to maintain her independence." She voted with Speaker Sal DiMasi 98% of the time and supported him for Speaker despite the ethical questions swirling around him at the time. She votes with current Speaker 99% of the time http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/…   more ›
