Is Driving Really That Bad in Boston?

Years after the Big Dig, Boston's still considered one of the country's worst cities for driving. Is there any way to change the roads for the better?

Bostonians have a (deserved?) reputation as terrible drivers, but a financial website says the city's driving is awful even without the missing turn signals and tailgaters. Financial site NerdWallet said Boston is the fifth worst driving city in America based on the price of gas, amount of traffic and population density. Boston's ranked worse than legendary driving nightmare Washington, D.C. in the list. "Boston drivers are known for being aggressive, and it’s no wonder they get frustrated—Boston drivers sit in 53 hours of traffic per year," wrote NerdWallet. Try going North from South Station along Atlantic Ave. There are 4 - 5 lights, completely out of sync, plus the 93 North entrance and add in pedestrians, and it sometime takes 45 minutes or more to go from the WTC to the North End.   more ›

State Police Plan Suffolk County Sobriety Checkpoint

Troopers will be looking for individuals driving under the influence of alcohol on Saturday, Dec. 8 into Sunday, Dec. 9.

Massachusetts State Police will be on the lookout for drunk drivers in Suffolk County this weekend. State troopers will operate a sobriety checkpoint from Saturday, Dec. 8, into Sunday, Dec. 9, according to a press release issued Tuesday. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," Colonel Timothy P. Police: Stop Wearing Earbuds While Driving

State police and transportation officials warn against wearing earbuds while on the road, adding to the list of driving distractions.

In some states, drivers can be issued a ticket for talking on a cell phone behind the wheel. Texting and driving is now illegal in Massachusetts. State Police want to remind Massachusetts drivers that listening to headphones is illegal as well. State Police say more drivers are using hands free technology to communicate while driving, and while wearing one earpiece is allowable under the law, wearing two is not. “Some operators have begun to use their headsets to listen to music, audio books, and other media while driving,” state police said in a Tuesday advisory.  “Frankly, there is no legitimate reason for an operator to be wearing both headphones while driving.” Police say the use of earbud headphones while driving cuts off one of the “…
