With only days to go before nomination papers are due in the race for U.S. Senate, last week was a busy one for announced and potential candidates looking to fill the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State. The Republican field lost one prominent candidate, and another generated a bit of controversy. On the Democratic side, Congressmen Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) have been working through their pre-primary debate schedule and campaigning across the state. The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday proposed ending first-class mail delivery on Saturdays.
In the coming weeks, Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch will likely try to distance themselves as they seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. But on Wednesday, both men spoke out about the U.S. Postal Service’s proposal to cut first-class mail delivery on Saturday. The plan calls to end regular mail service, while maintaining Saturday delivery for packages and express mail. Lynch said he is “deeply concerned” that the postal service announced its proposal “without congressional consent. “The elimination of Saturday mail delivery will have a negative impact on thousands of businesses across the nation that are operating on a six-day schedule. Senate Republican Leader Richard Tisei says he is considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat recently vacated by John Kerry after the long-time senator was appointed Secretary of State earlier this week. “In the coming days, I will be talking with family, friends, and supporters to consider the best role that I can play in helping to bring new, alternative leadership to Washington,” Tisei said in a statement released Friday. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA, plans to announce he will run for the seat John Kerry is expected to vacate if he confirmed as Secretary of State, according to the Boston Globe. A source told the Globe that Lynch will challenge Congressman Ed Markey, D-Malden for the Democratic primary nomination. Markey recently announced he was running for the seat. Lynch plans to formally announce his plans after Kerry’s expected confirmation.
