Whiteout conditions are expected as the storm intensifies.
What began as a blizzard watch for the Boston area has now been upgraded to a blizzard warning. The National Weather Service issued the warning for the majority of Eastern Massachusetts Thursday afternoon, as it anticipates about 2 feet of snow to descend upon the area Friday into Saturday. "White out conditions are anticipated as roads become snow-covered by the Friday evening commute," the warning states. "Strong north-northeast winds are anticipated with gusts up to around 60 miles per hour, resulting in blowing and drifting of snow. Damage to trees and structures along with scattered power outages are anticipated." The city is already mobilizing to clean and clear roads during and after the upcoming storm. This is their plan.
The city's public works department is readying more than 600 pieces of equipment for the upcoming storm, gearing up for what could be the biggest storm Boston has seen in years. The DPW starts their preparations by pre-treating as many streets as possible, prepping the salters, sanders and plows, and coordinating with the mayor's office to get residents to keep their cars out of the way. Saturday: Just over 500 NSTAR customers in Boston were without power at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The city appears to be one of the lighter-hit areas in the electric company's coverage area. During severe winter weather, the MBTA may reduce its scheduling of trains, buses and other modes of transportation.
UPDATE: The MBTA is suspending all services at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Morning and afternoon service will run with "significant delays." The MBTA adjusts the scheduling of all of its modes of transportation in real time during severe snow events, and the service provides several frequently updated resources to check while the snow is coming down. Forecasters are warning the timing of an approaching snowstorm may make Monday afternoon and evening commute slippery.
There may be an inch of snow on the ground on Monday evening during the evening commute, according to forecasters at WHDH-TV. "Don't expect a ton of snow, but a general 1-3" falls late Monday afternoon, through the evening, producing slick roads, perhaps in time for the ride home from work," writes meterologist Chris Lambert in his blog. Even though not much snow will fall, Lambert said that the snow "will create slick spots on the roads Monday evening and Monday night." The National Weather Service forecasts that the snow will start between 3-5 p.m. in Boston. The precipitation will change over to sleet later in the evening. Several inches of snow could fall in Eastern Massachusetts from the winter storm.
A snow storm will roll into Eastern Massachusetts Monday afternoon and continue through Tuesday morning, dumping a few inches of snow in the area. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch beginning Monday afternoon. The heaviest snow will be along the coast of Massachusetts, where 4 to 8 inches of snow could fall, but the storm watch includes the cities of Boston and Cambridge. Further inland, snowfall is expected to between 1 to 3 inches, according to the forecast by WHDH Channel 7. In Boston, the snow is forecast to start falling around 3 p.m. and not stop until Tuesday evening, according to weather.com.

Boston was spared from heavy snowfall, but the city is covered in the white stuff this morning. Share your pics here.
Boston and Brookline were spared from the brunt of Saturday's fast-moving storm. The National Weather Service reported 2.2 inches of snow at Logan Airport, and had a ham radio operator report 3.8 inches in Dorchester. As of 8:30 a.m. Sunday, NSTAR reported a single customer without power in the city. Still, it's nice to see a blanket of snow across the city (until you have to go out side and clear out your car, that is). Are you out with a shovel this morning? A second storm is headed to the area and could make driving hazardous on Saturday.
A second storm of the week is headed toward New England and will dump more snow onto the area on Saturday. 7News meteorologists are predicting Beacon Hill will get between 2 to 4 inches of snow in the storm that is expected to start on Saturday afternoon and spread into the early hours of Sunday. The good news is that snow removal shouldn’t be a backbreaking endeavour. CBSBoston’s Todd Gutner said the snow will be “dry and fluffy for most,” though he warned that driving could be hazardous at times on Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Wednesday afternoon. Boston snowfall totals now estimated between 4-6 inches.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of Eastern Massachusetts effective until 6 p.m. Thursday. The warning called for 4-8 inches of snow and a light coating of ice from the storm. As of 3:08 p.m., the service’s snow total graphics showed Boston within a band of 4-6 inches of snow. Estimated snow totals have fluctuated over the last two days but steadily increased since this morning. “Snow will fall heavily at times through the evening rush hour before becoming lighter.
