YOUR TURN: Is Suffolk University Overpriced?

A recent survey names Suffolk as one of the least affordable schools in the country.

A recent Newsweek article named Suffolk University among the least affordable colleges in the country. Only six schools are harder on the pocketbook, by the magazine's numbers.  Newsweek reports that 73 percent of the school's graduates carry debt, and that four out of five students receive some form of aid to help them pay the $48,202 total cost each year.  But Suffolk spokesman Greg Gatlin says that Suffolk, aside from housing costs, is actually relatively affordable. “Suffolk University has one of the lower tuition rates for private universities in the Boston area. It’s true that the cost of University housing is high, given that our residence halls are in the heart of Downtown Boston and are relatively new. We house about 25 percent of…

Photo Gallery: Volunteers Deck the Hill

Volunteers from across the Hill were trimming, hanging and decking all weekend to turn Beacon Hill into a winter wonderland.

For more than 25 years the residents of Beacon Hill have been pitching in to decorate the neighborhood's 1,100 gas lamp posts with garlands and red bows to celebrate the holidays. About 125 volunteers turned out on Saturday and Sunday to lend a hand and deck the Hill. The Beacon Hill Civic Association organizes Holiday Decorating Days. It costs about $14 to outfit just one poll with holiday cheer. The money is raised through a cocktail party hosted at Hampshire House and a poll sponsorship program.

Suffolk University Opens Much Anticipated Theater

Mayor and other dignitaries attend ribbon-cutting of renovated historical space.

On the evening of Nov. 5, spotlights shown from the front of 525 Washington St. for the first time in many years. The Modern Theater, which was purchased by Suffolk University in 2008, was re-opened with much fanfare Thursday as a 197-bed residence hall and 185-seat theater space.  As a jazz quartet and singer Amanda Carr serenaded a crowd of around 200 people who arrived at the red carpet ribbon cutting ceremony, university officials could barely contain their  excitement over the new addition. "I'm speechless--really. It's a spectacular achievement. By maintaining the historic element, and combing the new with the old, there's just a lot of excitement, because this is part of our campus now," said Jason Potts, director of financial …

Suffolk Women's Volleyball Falls Short of Playoffs but Coach Confident about Next Season

The Suffolk Rams lost their volleyball match against Emmanuel 0-3 but coach is certain the team will make playoffs next year.

The Suffolk University Rams women's volleyball team traveled to Emmanuel College Saturday for a two game match-up against the Cadets from Norwich University and the Emmanuel College Saints. After dropping the first of the two matches to Norwich (3-0), the Rams were looking to end their season with a victory against cross town rival Emmanuel. Suffolk Head Coach, Heather Cox said, "The first match against Norwich was tough and we wanted to come out strong against Emmanuel. It was the last game of the year, we wanted to really push for a win and our team was really motivated to beat Emmanuel. Going out with a victory is always better than a loss." The first game in the match against Emmanuel had the Rams falling 25-11 and the remaining two …

Just Four Seasons Old, Suffolk Lady Rams Soccer Continues to Impress

Making it to the post-season after just four seasons of existence, the Suffolk University Women's Soccer Team has far exceeded the expectations of many.

When a new program reaches varsity status it usually takes a few bumps at the beginning as they get used to the competition. With the Suffolk University Women's soccer team, however, success came much earlier than anticipated. Despite their 3-1 loss to Emmanuel College on Sunday night, the Lady Rams exceeded many expectations when they captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season crown when they defeated Norwich last weekend. That win was just one of nine consecutive victories for the Lady Rams.  Emmanuel's Saints broke the Rams' streak on Sunday at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, making their first post-season appearance a short one. But the Lady Rams head coach says the team has really exceeded expectations in its short …
