The city released unofficial results Wednesday morning of wards and precinct numbers. Of the 10,435 registered voters on Beacon Hill (Ward 5, Pct. 3, 4, 5, 11 and Ward 3, Pct. 6), 6,522 voted, or 62.5 percent. See the tables below for more information on how Beacon Hill voted. Updates: 10 a.m.: Lines out the door at 127 Mt. Vernon St. 12:30 p.m.: An observers says voting has been brisk at the polling station at 127 Mt. Vernon St. 818 voters so far. 12:45 p.m.: No lines at the polling station at the State House. 1 p.m.: No lines at West End Branch library on Cambridge Street. 3:20 p.m.: 1013 votes cast at 127 Mt. President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Stephen Lynch elected Congressman of the new 8th District.
Stephen Lynch was elected the Congressman of the 8th District, defeating challenger Joseph Selvaggi Tuesday night by a landslide. Lynch was a popular choice across the district’s 24 cities and towns. The South Boston Democrat received 75 percent of the District’s vote compared to Selvaggi who received 25 percent, according to election results from CBS news. Lynch said he believes his campaign efforts of going door to door paid off in the election. "I did extremely well in all the new towns," Lynch said. " I worked really hard and I'm really honored to represent the new 8th District." A majority of voters in Massachusetts on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 11 Electoral votes.
Barack Obama won Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Shortly after 8 p.m., the AP called Massachusetts for Obama, along with with six other east coast states and the District of Columbia. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Massachusetts. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. Due to anticipated crowds, Boston officials are asking residents to vote during "off peak" times during the day, if possible.
City officials said to expect long lines on Tuesday's election day in Boston for a possible "record" turnout. "Lines are always longest first thing in the morning and after 4 p.m., so if voters' schedules allow, they should vote during non-peak hours," said Emilee Ellison, a spokeswoman for the city of Boston. Non-peak hours are traditionally from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Polls open at 7 a.m. and will stay open until 8 p.m. Polls will remain open to all residents in line by 8 p.m. Residents can check their voter current status on the city's website before they show up, as well. According to the latest poll by UMass Lowell, Brown had a one point lead heading into election day, but the lead was within the poll's margin of error.
Just a day before election day, a new poll released shows that Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown are virtually tied in the US Senate race among likely voters in Massachusetts. Brown is ahead of Warren by 1 percentage point, 49-48, the poll showed. The one-point advantage is within the poll's 4.1 margin of error. The latest poll was conducted by UMass Lowell's Center for Public Opinion and the Boston Herald. Nearly one thousand Massachusetts voters were surveyed between Wednesday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 3. The poll found that Brown is viewed favorably by 54 percent of the 956 voters surveyed, and 39 percent hold a negative opinion of him, according to the Herald.
