Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, is planning several events this week to kick of his run for the U.S. Senate.
Former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez will officially launch his U.S. Senate campaign on Thursday and Friday, according to the Boston Herald. Gomez, a Republican from Cohasset, will run for the seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry. His campaign kicks off Thursday with events in Boston and Springfield, according to the Herald. Friday will bring more events on the North and South shores, though the Herald didn’t specify any venues or times. Gomez, known for evading the spotlight, will also likely stop for several “meet-and-greet” events with local leaders and supporters during those two days. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. The congressman said he is giving "serious consideration" to a run for Senate.
Another Massachusetts Congressman is seriously considering a run for Sen. John Kerry’s seat in a special election this year. Congressman Stephen Lynch is reportedly talking to “well-known political consultants” and planning a possible run in a Democratic primary, reported The Boston Herald. “I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” Lynch said in a statement to the Herald. The Democratic frontrunner to take Kerry’s seat is Congressman Ed Markey, who is the longest serving member of Congress from Massachusetts. Kerry and Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the late Sen. The bill eases portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff."
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a deal late Tuesday to ease portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff," according to the Huffington Post. How did our local representatives in Congress vote? Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, supported the measure. The compromise was approved by the Senate at 2 a.m. Tuesday, and despite talk of rejecting it, the House ultimately passed the bill by a vote of 257 to 167. Sens. Scott Brown and John Kerry both supported the measure in the Senate. "Just voted for the fiscal cliff bill," Brown said on his Facebook Page at 1:55 a.m on New Year's Day. "Not the full answer but a small step forward. A lot of work next session. Good luck."

With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. The New York Times, among others, reports that the Massachusetts senator and former Democratic presidential nominee will be the selection for the post. Many expected Kerry to be the president's pick after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice took her name out of the running last week. Rice had been under scrutiny by Republicans in Congress for statements she made in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.

The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. Thousands of senior citizens are expected to march in the streets Wednesday.
Senior citizens are expected to hold a protest rally at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre Wednesday morning and then march by the offices of Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown in what is promised to be a massive rally to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The protest is being held as a congressional “super-committee” is putting together a proposal to reduce the federal deficit. Senator John Kerry is on that committee. Seniors will board buses in several communities in and around Boston for the rally at 270 Tremont Street that is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Buses are expected to transport seniors from Cambridge, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Malden, Worcester, and West Roxbury, according to Jason A.
