WATCH: Longfellow Bridge Rehab Project in Animation

Check out the scope of work to be completed over the next three-and-a-half years on the historic bridge.

The long-anticipated Longfellow Bridge detour for vehicle traffic headed from Boston to Cambridge began over the weekend.

If you're headed that way for your commute this morning, expect to be detoured over the Craigie Bridge and onto Edwin H. Land Boulevard.

And then, expect that detour to happen again and again every morning for the next three-and-a-half years as much-needed rehabilitation work is completed to the historic "salt and pepper shaker" Longfellow Bridge.

If you're wondering exactly what that work will entail, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has created the above animated video posted on YouTube.

In the video, you can watch what kind of work will take place on the bridge over the next three-and-a-half years in just over seven-and-a-half minutes, complete with a plaintive, soothing acoustic rock soundtrack. Nice touch, MassDOT.
