Tree Removal Taking Place For Longfellow Project

A new ADA-compliant footbridge from Charles Circle to the Esplanade will be built as part of the Longfellow Bridge rehab project.

Crews are beginning work this week on tree removal as past of the Longfellow Bridge rehabilitation project to start this summer.

According to officials, work was scheduled to begin Monday on the Boston side of the bridge to remove trees along Mugar Way to make way for the construction of a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian bridge from Charles Circle to the Esplanade.

On the Cambridge side of the bridge, trees are being removed so the rehabilitation work on the bridge can start.

Preliminary work will also include the transplanting of eight trees in Boston and nine in Cambridge, a project to be completed in mid-July.

A public information session on the Longfellow Bridge rehab project will take place Wednesday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, 45 Carleton St., Building E 25, Room 111 from 7 to 9 p.m.
